Pope Francis: Same-Sex Marriage Is a Diabolical Attack on the Family

The queer man heading Fordham University's theology department is not in step with the current head of the Catholic Church, who as the archbishop of Buenos Aires referred to same-sex marriage as Satan's weapon for attacking the family.

In 2010, then Cdl. Jorge Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, was fighting the legalization of same-sex marriage in Argentina. He addressed a letter to Argentina's four monasteries asking them for prayers to defeat the immoral legislation. He began the letter by explaining how same-sex marriage would exploit children:

In the coming weeks, the Argentine people will face a situation whose outcome can seriously harm the family ... At stake is the identity and survival of the family: father, mother and children. At stake are the lives of many children who will be discriminated against in advance, and deprived of their human development given by a father and a mother and willed by God.

In his letter the cardinal, who three years later would become Pope Francis, then clarified that legalizing same-sex marriage was a diabolical attack on the family:

At stake is the total rejection of God's law engraved in our hearts. Let us not be naive: this is not simply a political struggle, but it is an attempt to destroy God's plan. It is not just a bill but a "move" of the father of lies who seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.

At the Humanum conference in 2014, Pope Francis stated, "Children have a right to grow up in a family with a father and a mother capable of creating a suitable environment for the child's development and emotional maturity." In 2016, Pope Francis also spoke out against the legalization of same-sex marriage in Mexico.
