Upcoming Lecture On Same-Sex Attraction At Bronx School Upsets Alumni
A Catholic high school in the Bronx has gay rights advocates fuming after officials invited a retired priest who tries to “pray away the gay” to speak at an upcoming meeting.
The Rev. Donald Timone is scheduled to speak at a parents association meeting at Cardinal Spellman High School on Tuesday.
Timone represents two Catholic groups, Courage and EnCourage, that advocate that homosexuals live chaste lives through prayer and a 12-step program.
But Bronx gay rights groups and one out-and-proud graduate of Spellman blasted the program for ignoring the reality of sexual orientation.
“It makes it look like it’s a support group, but once you really see what they are doing it’s disturbing,” said graduate Clinton Leupp, 48. “They are trying to shame these kids!”
Leupp — better known as Miss Coco Peru — graduated from Spellman in 1983 and has performed cabaret shows in drag for more than 20 years.
The Rev. Trevor Nichols, the school president, said Timone would merely deliver a message in line with church doctrine.
“Courage is an organization that simply tries to teach what the Catholic Church teaches on certain issues,” Nichols said. “It is a very caring and supportive group.”
