FCDF--News Update:

The Scandal of the USD Drag Queen Contest Shows No Respect for the Souls of Its Students:

As previously reported, the Vatican’s Congregation for Education has now completed its investigation of the USD Draw Queen Contest and concluded that “in view of the gravity of the case” this ill-conceived event constitutes a “scandal.”  This is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church has to say about such a “grave offense” under the section entitled “Respect for the souls of others: Scandal:”

We need your help to keep up the fight---$100,  $500 or $5,000 as we pay for the canon lawyers and inform parents and alums about what is happening to our beloved University of San Diego:  www.ConscienceDefense.org.

2284:  Scandal is an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. The person who gives scandal becomes his neighbor's tempter. He damages virtue and integrity; he may even draw his brother into spiritual death. Scandal is a grave offense if by deed or omission another is deliberately led into a grave offense.

2285:  Scandal takes on a particular gravity by reason of the authority of those who cause it or the weakness of those who are scandalized. It prompted our Lord to utter this curse: "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea." Scandal is grave when given by those who by nature or office are obliged to teach and educate others. Jesus reproaches the scribes and Pharisees on this account: he likens them to wolves in sheep's clothing.

2286:  Scandal can be provoked by laws or institutions, by fashion or opinion. Therefore, they are guilty of scandal who establish laws or social structures leading to the decline of morals and the corruption of religious practice, or to "social conditions that, intentionally or not, make Christian conduct and obedience to the Commandments difficult and practically impossible." This is also true of business leaders who make rules encouraging fraud, teachers who provoke their children to anger, or manipulators of public opinion who turn it away from moral values.

2287Anyone who uses the power at his disposal in such a way that it leads others to do wrong becomes guilty of scandal and responsible for the evil that he has directly or indirectly encouraged. "Temptations to sin are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come!"

Unfortunately, the Vatican’s pronouncement on the scandalous nature of the USD Drag Show, has thus far not prompted the leadership of USD to cancel this event. The cultural elites in our society like to say that those with a Judeo-Christian worldview, especially as it concerns such issues as cross-dressing and same-sex “marriage”, are on the “wrong side of history”.  Our response is that time will tell how history will judge us on how we defended our faith. In any event, defenders of the faith are more concerned with being on “the wrong side of eternity” than the anti-Catholic view of the wrong side of history.

Finally, please pray for the repose of the souls of two of FCDF’s greatest allies in spiritual warfare who have recently gone home to our Lord. They have no doubt already joyously joined the communion of saints in heaven with defenders of the faith like Saint Thomas More and Saint John Fisher. I am speaking of Deacon Ken Finn, who served with Charles LiMandri as a founding board member of the Culture of Life Family Services, as well as Fr. Ray Ryland, who taught theology for over 20 years at USD.  Both of these holy men prayed frequently for FCDF’s work for religious freedom while they were still with us here on earth.  We are profoundly grateful for their sacrifices and are greatly comforted to know that they continue to pray for us at the throne of our Lord.

What Are USD’s Faithful Catholic Alumni Saying About the Drag Show:

Below is a letter to Mary Lyons and the USD Alumni Director from a  “very sad alumni” about the USD Drag Show that was sent as recently as April 4, 2014.  There are over 130 similar messages from other alumni, former faculty, students, clergy, and other concerned Catholics, posted in the “Take Action Now” section of the website  www.AlumniForACatholicUSD.org.  We estimate that USD has  received thousands of other e-mails, letters, and phone calls requesting the cancellation of the Drag Show since its inception in 2012. We know that tens of thousands of people have signed petitions calling for the cancellation of the event. The website www.AlumniForACatholicUSD.org has had over 1.1 million hits in the last two years with very little promotion. The new tab on the Home Page for the “2014 Drag Queen Show” contains the letter from the Vatican calling it a “scandal” and numerous recent articles about the event from the Catholic media. That website also contains a section on the actual teaching of the Catholic Church on these issues, that USD’s leadership continues to ignore at its peril.

Dear President Lyons and Mr. Bass,

I am a "once proud" graduate of the University of San Diego ( 1965 ). Over the years I have heard of the growing liberalism on the San Diego Campus, hence have been reluctant to contribute. I am not a rich person and my contribution would have to be small, however, I recently spoke to a young woman campaigning to raise money for the University, and she was so enthusiastic and delightful that I thought, O.K. for her benefit I will contribute. I was getting ready to make a contribution and then heard, and read about the "Drag Shows" you have been having. I was disturbed and appalled!!!

Why on Earth do you even bother to call yourselves "CATHOLIC" anymore? Over the years you have drifted away from important aspects of Catholicism as set forth in the Magisterium and Tradition so why do you even bother to consider that the University of San Diego should be referred to as Catholic? How is it Catholic? How? From the perspective of this alumna you have betrayed the Church that I dearly love. Unfortunately, you are not the only so-called "Catholic" University to do so. My daughters graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans and Georgetown...they no longer have anything to do with the Church. There was absolutely NO spiritual nurturing on those campuses either. So, IF you are not going to help the Church to grow by fostering true Catholic spirituality, and instead, stress aspects such as moral relativism, situational ethics, secular humanism, then at least have the courage to be HONEST about it, and STOP operating under illusional Catholicism.

I feel sorry for the dear, enthusiastic student who called me. What on Earth can she be learning at a University that "seems" to have betrayed its very foundation and embraced the values of a "world" which is leading us more and more into spiritual darkness.

May the good Lord have MERCY on us all.

             A very sad alumna.
