Pope Francis has declared that the role of a Catholic University is to be "the uncompromising witness...to the Church’s moral teaching... to uphold that teaching as authoritatively proclaimed by the magisterium of her pastors...[and] continue to offer unambiguous testimony to this aspect of its foundational Catholic identity, especially in the face of efforts, from whatever quarter, to dilute that indispensable witness."

Charles LiMandri and Thomas McKenna Discuss the USD Drag Debacle on the Roger Hedgecock Show:

On April 9, 2014, Charles LiMandri, the President and Chief Counsel of the FCDF, and Thomas McKenna, the Founder and President of Catholic Action for Faith and Family, appeared on the Roger Hedgecock Show to discuss the USD Drag Show.  Roger Hedgecock is a respected conservative talk show host who is an attorney and former Mayor of the City of San Diego.  He has been a staunch supporter of the work of the FCDF in the past, particularly with respect to the Mt. Soledad Cross case.  Please see the interview on the USD Drag Show here:  www.utsandiego.com.

During the interview, Charles LiMandri pointed out that the issue is no longer a matter of who is right or wrong about whether a drag show at USD is in line with the teaching of the Catholic Church.  The Vatican has already definitively stated that the drag show is a “scandal.”  The fact that USD is hosting and promoting the scandalous drag show under these circumstances proves that it is more interested in advancing the radical homosexual agenda than the teachings of the Catholic Church. Therefore, as Mr. McKenna and Mr. LiMandri  further point out in the interview, their Canon Law Case against USD, presently pending at the Vatican, will necessarily continue. In the meantime, they suggest that you withhold your financial support of the University.  They further ask that you pray that those responsible for the spiritual welfare of the students of USD will  see the light and bring the University back in line with the teachings of the Church and the mission and purpose of its dedicated founders.

For an article that appeared in the April 9, 2014 San Diego Union-Tribune about the USD Drag Show, please see this link: http://utsandiego.com/news/2014/apr/09/usd-drag-show-goes-on-despite-vatican-appeal/. That article contains a poll to express your approval or disapproval of the USD "celebration of gender expression" which, as of this printing, is running a huge majority against the drag show (72% against with 1370 votes cast).  Remarkably, in the U-T article, USD spokesman Tim O'Malley is quoted as saying that "there's nothing in the event that violates the cannons of the Catholic Church."  We refer him to the "Church Teaching" section of the website www.AlumniForACatholicUSD.org. That website contains Section 2233 from the Catholic Catechism which states: "Everyone, man and woman, should acknowledge and accept his sexual identity. Physical, moral, and spiritual difference and complementarity are oriented toward the goods of marriage and the flourishing of family life. The harmony of the couple and of society depends in part on the way in which the complementarity, needs, and mutual support between the sexes are lived out."

USD's defiance of the Vatican's pronouncement against it and established Catholic doctrine is simply astonishing. It is equally astonishing that Mr. O'Malley would also make the statement in the U-T article that: "There is no evidence that cross dressing is inherently homosexual." This is especially disingenuous given the fact that for the past two years the USD Drag Show has been orchestrated and run by lesbian faculty members, features homosexual professional transvestites, the student participants tend to self-identify as homosexual or bisexual, and the entire event is little more than a pro-homosexual pep rally celebrating what the Church has always considered to be sinful conduct.

It is worth contrasting the kind of events held at USD when Charles LiMandri was the student Director of the Speakers Bureau in the mid-1970's. In the same venue where USD now shamelessly celebrates perversity, Charles LiMandri previously brought the following renowned speakers to the University: the creator of the Twilight Zone Rod Serling, composer Aaron Copeland, director Otto Preminger, exorcist priest Karl Patzelt, science fiction writer Ray Bradbury, Senator Sam Ervin, psychic Jean Dixon, oceanographer Jean Michele Costeau, political commentator John McLaughlin, actor George Plimpton, psychologist Rollo May, Senator George McGovern, author Charles Berlitz, comedians Dick Gregory and Jimmy Walker, T.V. personalities Art Linkletter and Steve Allen, and an intriguing program on "Who Killed JFK?"

Charles LiMandri even chaired a stirring political debate at USD between William F. Buckley, Jr. and San Francisco Mayor Joseph L. Alioto.  He was also instrumental in bringing Bob Hope to speak at USD.  In many cases, literally hundreds of people had to be turned away at the door because Camino (now Shiley) Theater was filled to maximum capacity.  This acclaimed speakers program was the envy of every other university and college in San Diego at the time. Yet, there was no attempt to indoctrinate or recruit USD students to anyone's political agenda, but only to entertain and enlighten them on important and timely issues.  How very sad that USD has long since abandoned its once focus on providing its students with such quality programs and what it once proudly called a "values oriented education."

Finally, although the Vatican, and the great majority of the general public and USD alumni support this effort, Charles LiMandri recently received a scathing e-mail from a "proud alumna" of USD.  Not surprisingly, she angrily dissents from the Church teaching on homosexuality and same-sex "marriage."  She rebuked him for talking about his experiences at USD, and the awards he received there, as a platform  to criticize the University.  Contrary to her assertions, Mr. LiMandri has  discussed his experiences at USD, and the honors received from the University, for four main reasons:  First, to establish the basis for his understanding of what USD was before, is now, and what it should be; Second, to establish  his legal "standing" (i.e. his right to pursue the Canon Law case against USD); Third, to demonstrate that he has no axe to grind against USD because his personal experiences there have all been very positive and rewarding; and Fourth, to demonstrate that he is acting out of charity to help USD get back on track so that its students can have the type of authentically Catholic educational experience that he enjoyed there.

In conclusion, Charles LiMandri is acutely aware that if his efforts in this regard are not sincerely motivated to serve God and His Church then they will not be successful.
