A Letter From a Former USD Professor

A Letter From a Former USD Professor

Dear President Lyons

While I admire the many wonderful things you have done for USD, I will never understand why you have allowed the curriculum and culture to be debased in this way. Perhaps you have not seen the videos of the Santa Clara University show, or the DePaul show.  Perhaps you were not aware of what these shows are really all about.  But, you should know by now–and must be concerned about what will likely happen onstage tonight.
As you know I left my job at USD because I could no longer support the anti-Catholic activities that you were allowing to take place.  You not only allowed them, you encouraged them by rewarding the pro-abortion, pro-gay, and anti-Catholic staff and faculty members with awards and promotions.  Perhaps you were not aware.  But, while I was there, students were encouraged to act as student interns (for class credit) at Planned Parenthood, and faculty members actively campaigned for same sex marriage. Many of the speakers you invited to campus denigrated the faith and teachings of the Church–usually without a rebuttal from the faithful perspective. Our insurance coverage–provided by USD–provided coverage for abortion and contraception for years. Those who were faithful to Church teachings were marginalized–some have left.  I was sorry to resign – I loved the USD students and our Church community there – but found I could no longer in good conscience continue to work there. I am sorry that all of the good things you have done in growing the campus and the endowment will be overshadowed by the degradation of the culture and curriculum you have allowed. I am still hopeful that you might use this opportunity to begin to reclaim the Catholic identity that has been lost.  As a strong Catholic woman, you have a tremendous opportunity to turn things around.  I pray that you will.
