The<\/strong><strong>Vocationto\u00a0Chastity<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>2337\u00a0Chastity\u00a0means\u00a0the\u00a0successful\u00a0integration\u00a0of\u00a0sexuality\u00a0within the\u00a0person\u00a0and thus the\u00a0inner\u00a0unity\u00a0of\u00a0man\u00a0in his\u00a0bodily\u00a0and\u00a0spiritual\u00a0being.\u00a0Sexuality, in which\u00a0man&#8217;s\u00a0belonging\u00a0to the\u00a0bodily\u00a0and\u00a0biological\u00a0world\u00a0is\u00a0expressed, becomes\u00a0personal\u00a0and\u00a0truly\u00a0human\u00a0when it is\u00a0integrated\u00a0into the\u00a0relationship\u00a0of one\u00a0person\u00a0to another, in the\u00a0complete\u00a0and\u00a0lifelong\u00a0mutual\u00a0gift\u00a0of a\u00a0man\u00a0and a\u00a0woman.<br \/>\nThe\u00a0virtue\u00a0of\u00a0chastity\u00a0therefore\u00a0involves\u00a0the\u00a0integrity\u00a0of the\u00a0person\u00a0and the\u00a0integrality\u00a0of the\u00a0gift.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0integrity\u00a0of the\u00a0person<\/p>\n<p>2338\u00a0The\u00a0chaste\u00a0person\u00a0maintains\u00a0the\u00a0integrity\u00a0of the\u00a0powers\u00a0of\u00a0life\u00a0and\u00a0love\u00a0placed\u00a0in him. This\u00a0integrity\u00a0ensures\u00a0the\u00a0unity\u00a0of the\u00a0person; it is\u00a0opposed\u00a0to any\u00a0behavior\u00a0that would\u00a0impair\u00a0it. It\u00a0tolerates\u00a0neither a\u00a0double\u00a0life\u00a0nor\u00a0duplicity\u00a0in\u00a0speech.<sup>124<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>2339\u00a0Chastity\u00a0includes\u00a0an\u00a0apprenticeship\u00a0in\u00a0self-mastery\u00a0which is a\u00a0training\u00a0in\u00a0human\u00a0freedom. the\u00a0alternative\u00a0is\u00a0clear: either\u00a0man\u00a0governs\u00a0his\u00a0passions\u00a0and\u00a0finds\u00a0peace, or he\u00a0lets\u00a0himself be\u00a0dominated\u00a0by them and becomes\u00a0unhappy.<sup>125<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Man&#8217;s\u00a0dignity\u00a0therefore\u00a0requires\u00a0him to\u00a0act\u00a0out ofconscious\u00a0and\u00a0free\u00a0choice, as\u00a0moved\u00a0and\u00a0drawn\u00a0in a\u00a0personal\u00a0way\u00a0from within, and not by\u00a0blind\u00a0impulses\u00a0in himself or by\u00a0mere\u00a0external\u00a0constraint.\u00a0Man\u00a0gains\u00a0such\u00a0dignity\u00a0when,\u00a0ridding\u00a0himself of all\u00a0slavery\u00a0to the\u00a0passions, he\u00a0presses\u00a0forward\u00a0to his\u00a0goal\u00a0by\u00a0freely\u00a0choosing\u00a0what is\u00a0good\u00a0and, by his\u00a0diligence\u00a0and\u00a0skill,\u00a0effectively\u00a0secures\u00a0for himself the\u00a0means\u00a0suited\u00a0to this end.&#8221;<sup>126<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>2340\u00a0Whoever\u00a0wants\u00a0to\u00a0remain\u00a0faithful\u00a0to his\u00a0baptismal\u00a0promises\u00a0and\u00a0resist\u00a0temptations\u00a0will\u00a0want\u00a0to\u00a0adopt\u00a0the\u00a0means\u00a0for\u00a0doing\u00a0so:\u00a0self-knowledge,\u00a0practice\u00a0of an\u00a0ascesis\u00a0adapted\u00a0to the\u00a0situations\u00a0that\u00a0confront\u00a0him,\u00a0obedience\u00a0to\u00a0God&#8217;s\u00a0commandments,\u00a0exercise\u00a0of the\u00a0moral\u00a0virtues, and\u00a0fidelity\u00a0to\u00a0prayer. &#8220;Indeed it is through\u00a0chastity\u00a0that we are\u00a0gathered\u00a0together and\u00a0led\u00a0back\u00a0to the\u00a0unity\u00a0from which we were\u00a0fragmented\u00a0into\u00a0multiplicity.&#8221;<sup>127<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>2341\u00a0The\u00a0virtue\u00a0of\u00a0chastity\u00a0comes\u00a0under the\u00a0cardinal\u00a0virtue\u00a0of\u00a0temperance, which\u00a0seeks\u00a0to\u00a0permeate\u00a0the\u00a0passions\u00a0and\u00a0appetites\u00a0of the\u00a0senses\u00a0with\u00a0reason.<\/p>\n<p>2342\u00a0Self-mastery\u00a0is a\u00a0long\u00a0and\u00a0exacting\u00a0work. One can never\u00a0consider\u00a0it\u00a0acquired\u00a0once and for all. It\u00a0presupposes\u00a0renewed\u00a0effort\u00a0at all\u00a0stages\u00a0of\u00a0life.<sup>128<\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0effort\u00a0required\u00a0can be more\u00a0intense\u00a0in\u00a0certain\u00a0periods, such as when the\u00a0personality\u00a0is being\u00a0formed\u00a0during\u00a0childhood\u00a0and\u00a0adolescence.<\/p>\n<p>2343\u00a0Chastity\u00a0has\u00a0laws\u00a0of\u00a0growth\u00a0which\u00a0progress\u00a0through\u00a0stages\u00a0marked\u00a0by\u00a0imperfection\u00a0and too often by\u00a0sin. &#8220;Man\u00a0. . .\u00a0day\u00a0by\u00a0day\u00a0builds\u00a0himself up through his many\u00a0free\u00a0decisions; and so he\u00a0knows,\u00a0loves, and\u00a0accomplishes\u00a0moral\u00a0good\u00a0by\u00a0stages\u00a0of\u00a0growth.&#8221;<sup>129<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>2344\u00a0Chastity\u00a0represents\u00a0an\u00a0eminently\u00a0personal\u00a0task; it also\u00a0involves\u00a0a\u00a0cultural\u00a0effort, for there is &#8220;an\u00a0interdependence\u00a0between\u00a0personal\u00a0betterment\u00a0and the\u00a0improvement\u00a0of\u00a0society.&#8221;<sup>130<\/sup>\u00a0Chastity\u00a0presupposes\u00a0respect\u00a0for the\u00a0rights\u00a0of the\u00a0person, in\u00a0particular\u00a0the\u00a0right\u00a0to\u00a0receive\u00a0information\u00a0and aneducation\u00a0that\u00a0respect\u00a0the\u00a0moral\u00a0and\u00a0spiritual\u00a0dimensions\u00a0of\u00a0human\u00a0life.<\/p>\n<p>2345\u00a0Chastity\u00a0is a\u00a0moral\u00a0virtue. It is also a\u00a0gift\u00a0from\u00a0God, a\u00a0grace, a\u00a0fruit\u00a0of\u00a0spiritual\u00a0effort.<sup>131<\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0Holy\u00a0Spirit\u00a0enables\u00a0one whom the\u00a0water\u00a0of\u00a0Baptism\u00a0has\u00a0regenerated\u00a0to\u00a0imitate\u00a0the\u00a0purity\u00a0of\u00a0Christ.<sup>132<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0integrality\u00a0of the\u00a0gift\u00a0of\u00a0self<\/p>\n<p>2346\u00a0Charity\u00a0is the\u00a0form\u00a0of all the\u00a0virtues. Under its\u00a0influence,\u00a0chastity\u00a0appears\u00a0as a\u00a0school\u00a0of the\u00a0gift\u00a0of the\u00a0person.\u00a0Self-mastery\u00a0is\u00a0ordered\u00a0to the\u00a0gift\u00a0of\u00a0self.\u00a0Chastity\u00a0leads\u00a0him who\u00a0practices\u00a0it to become a\u00a0witness\u00a0to his\u00a0neighbor\u00a0of\u00a0God&#8217;s\u00a0fidelity\u00a0and\u00a0loving\u00a0kindness.<\/p>\n<p>2347\u00a0The\u00a0virtue\u00a0of\u00a0chastity\u00a0blossoms\u00a0in\u00a0friendship. It\u00a0shows\u00a0the\u00a0disciple\u00a0how to\u00a0follow\u00a0and\u00a0imitate\u00a0him who has\u00a0chosen\u00a0us as his\u00a0friends,<sup>133<\/sup>\u00a0who has\u00a0given\u00a0himself\u00a0totally\u00a0to us and\u00a0allows\u00a0us to\u00a0participate\u00a0in his\u00a0divine\u00a0estate.\u00a0Chastity\u00a0is a\u00a0promise\u00a0of\u00a0immortality.<br \/>\nChastity\u00a0is\u00a0expressed\u00a0notably\u00a0in\u00a0friendship\u00a0with one&#8217;s\u00a0neighbor. Whether it\u00a0develops\u00a0between\u00a0persons\u00a0of the same or\u00a0opposite\u00a0sex,\u00a0friendship\u00a0represents\u00a0a\u00a0great\u00a0good\u00a0for all. It\u00a0leads\u00a0to\u00a0spiritual\u00a0communion.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0various\u00a0forms\u00a0of\u00a0chastity<\/p>\n<p>2348\u00a0All the\u00a0baptized\u00a0are\u00a0called\u00a0to\u00a0chastity. the\u00a0Christian\u00a0has &#8220;put\u00a0on\u00a0Christ,&#8221;<sup>134<\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0model\u00a0for all\u00a0chastity. All\u00a0Christ&#8217;s\u00a0faithful\u00a0are\u00a0called\u00a0to\u00a0lead\u00a0a\u00a0chaste\u00a0life\u00a0in\u00a0keeping\u00a0with their\u00a0particular\u00a0states\u00a0of\u00a0life. At the\u00a0moment\u00a0of his\u00a0Baptism, the\u00a0Christian\u00a0is\u00a0pledged\u00a0to\u00a0lead\u00a0his\u00a0affective\u00a0life\u00a0in\u00a0chastity.<\/p>\n<p>2349\u00a0&#8220;People\u00a0should\u00a0cultivate\u00a0[chastity] in the\u00a0way\u00a0that is\u00a0suited\u00a0to their\u00a0state\u00a0of\u00a0life. Some\u00a0profess\u00a0virginity\u00a0or\u00a0consecrated\u00a0celibacy\u00a0which\u00a0enables\u00a0them to\u00a0give\u00a0themselves to\u00a0God\u00a0alone with an\u00a0undivided\u00a0heart\u00a0in a\u00a0remarkable\u00a0manner. Others\u00a0live\u00a0in the\u00a0way\u00a0prescribed\u00a0for all by the\u00a0moral\u00a0law, whether they are\u00a0married\u00a0or\u00a0single.&#8221;<sup>135<\/sup>\u00a0Married\u00a0people\u00a0are\u00a0called\u00a0to\u00a0live\u00a0conjugal\u00a0chastity; others\u00a0practice\u00a0chastity\u00a0in\u00a0continence:<\/p>\n<p>There are\u00a0three\u00a0forms\u00a0of the\u00a0virtue\u00a0of\u00a0chastity: the first is that of\u00a0spouses, the\u00a0second\u00a0that of\u00a0widows, and the\u00a0third\u00a0that of\u00a0virgins. We do not\u00a0praise\u00a0any one of them to the\u00a0exclusion\u00a0of the others&#8230;. This is what makes for the\u00a0richness\u00a0of the\u00a0discipline\u00a0of the\u00a0Church.<sup>136<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>2350\u00a0Those who are\u00a0engaged\u00a0to\u00a0marry\u00a0are\u00a0called\u00a0to\u00a0live\u00a0chastity\u00a0in\u00a0continence. They should\u00a0see\u00a0in this\u00a0time\u00a0of\u00a0testing\u00a0a\u00a0discovery\u00a0of\u00a0mutual\u00a0respect, an\u00a0apprenticeship\u00a0in\u00a0fidelity, and the\u00a0hope\u00a0of\u00a0receiving\u00a0one another from\u00a0God. They should\u00a0reserve\u00a0for\u00a0marriage\u00a0the\u00a0expressions\u00a0of\u00a0affection\u00a0that\u00a0belong\u00a0to\u00a0married\u00a0love. They will\u00a0help\u00a0each other\u00a0grow\u00a0in\u00a0chastity.<\/p>\n<p>Offenses\u00a0against\u00a0chastity<\/p>\n<p>2351\u00a0Lust\u00a0is\u00a0disordered\u00a0desire\u00a0for or\u00a0inordinate\u00a0enjoyment\u00a0of\u00a0sexual\u00a0pleasure.\u00a0Sexual\u00a0pleasure\u00a0is\u00a0morally\u00a0disordered\u00a0when\u00a0sought\u00a0for itself,\u00a0isolated\u00a0from its\u00a0procreative\u00a0and\u00a0unitive\u00a0purposes.<\/p>\n<p>2352\u00a0By\u00a0masturbation\u00a0is to be\u00a0understood\u00a0the\u00a0deliberate\u00a0stimulation\u00a0of the\u00a0genital\u00a0organs\u00a0in\u00a0order\u00a0to\u00a0derive\u00a0sexual\u00a0pleasure. &#8220;Both the\u00a0Magisterium\u00a0of the\u00a0Church, in the\u00a0course\u00a0of a\u00a0constant\u00a0tradition, and the\u00a0moral\u00a0sense\u00a0of the\u00a0faithful\u00a0have been in no\u00a0doubt\u00a0and have\u00a0firmly\u00a0maintained\u00a0that\u00a0masturbation\u00a0is an\u00a0intrinsically\u00a0and\u00a0gravely\u00a0disordered\u00a0action.&#8221;<sup>137<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;The\u00a0deliberate\u00a0use\u00a0of the\u00a0sexual\u00a0faculty, for whatever\u00a0reason,\u00a0outside\u00a0of\u00a0marriage\u00a0is\u00a0essentially\u00a0contrary\u00a0to its\u00a0purpose.&#8221; For here\u00a0sexual\u00a0pleasure\u00a0is\u00a0sought\u00a0outside\u00a0of &#8220;the\u00a0sexual\u00a0relationship\u00a0which is\u00a0demanded\u00a0by the\u00a0moralorder\u00a0and in which the\u00a0total\u00a0meaning\u00a0of\u00a0mutual\u00a0self-giving\u00a0and\u00a0human\u00a0procreation\u00a0in the\u00a0context\u00a0of\u00a0true\u00a0love\u00a0is\u00a0achieved.&#8221;<sup>138<\/sup><br \/>\nTo\u00a0form\u00a0an\u00a0equitable\u00a0judgment\u00a0about the\u00a0subjects&#8217;\u00a0moral\u00a0responsibility\u00a0and to\u00a0guide\u00a0pastoral\u00a0action, one must\u00a0take\u00a0into\u00a0account\u00a0the\u00a0affective\u00a0immaturity,\u00a0force\u00a0of\u00a0acquired\u00a0habit,\u00a0conditions\u00a0of\u00a0anxiety, or other\u00a0psychological\u00a0or\u00a0social\u00a0factors\u00a0that\u00a0lessen\u00a0or even\u00a0extenuate\u00a0moral\u00a0culpability.<\/p>\n<p>2353\u00a0Fornication\u00a0is\u00a0carnal\u00a0union\u00a0between an\u00a0unmarried\u00a0man\u00a0and an\u00a0unmarried\u00a0woman. It is\u00a0gravely\u00a0contrary\u00a0to the\u00a0dignity\u00a0of\u00a0persons\u00a0and of\u00a0human\u00a0sexuality\u00a0which is\u00a0naturally\u00a0ordered\u00a0to the\u00a0good\u00a0of\u00a0spouses\u00a0and the\u00a0generation\u00a0and\u00a0education\u00a0of\u00a0children. Moreover, it is a\u00a0grave\u00a0scandal\u00a0when there is\u00a0corruption\u00a0of the\u00a0young.<\/p>\n<p>2354\u00a0Pornography\u00a0consists\u00a0in\u00a0removing\u00a0real\u00a0or\u00a0simulated\u00a0sexual\u00a0acts\u00a0from the\u00a0intimacy\u00a0of the\u00a0partners, in\u00a0order\u00a0to\u00a0display\u00a0them\u00a0deliberately\u00a0to\u00a0third\u00a0parties. It\u00a0offends\u00a0against\u00a0chastity\u00a0because it\u00a0perverts\u00a0the\u00a0conjugal\u00a0act, the\u00a0intimate\u00a0giving\u00a0of\u00a0spouses\u00a0to each other. It does\u00a0grave\u00a0injury\u00a0to the\u00a0dignity\u00a0of its\u00a0participants\u00a0(actors,\u00a0vendors, the\u00a0public), since each one becomes an\u00a0object\u00a0of\u00a0base\u00a0pleasure\u00a0and\u00a0illicit\u00a0profit\u00a0for others. It\u00a0immerses\u00a0all who are\u00a0involved\u00a0in the\u00a0illusion\u00a0of a\u00a0fantasy\u00a0world. It is a\u00a0grave\u00a0offense.\u00a0Civil\u00a0authorities\u00a0should\u00a0prevent\u00a0the\u00a0production\u00a0and\u00a0distribution\u00a0of\u00a0pornographic\u00a0materials.<\/p>\n<p>2355\u00a0Prostitution\u00a0does\u00a0injury\u00a0to the\u00a0dignity\u00a0of the\u00a0person\u00a0who\u00a0engages\u00a0in it,\u00a0reducing\u00a0the\u00a0person\u00a0to an\u00a0instrument\u00a0of\u00a0sexual\u00a0pleasure. the one who\u00a0pays\u00a0sins\u00a0gravely\u00a0against himself: he\u00a0violates\u00a0the\u00a0chastity\u00a0to which his\u00a0Baptism\u00a0pledged\u00a0him and\u00a0defiles\u00a0his\u00a0body, the\u00a0temple\u00a0of the\u00a0Holy\u00a0Spirit.<sup>139<\/sup>Prostitution\u00a0is a\u00a0social\u00a0scourge. It\u00a0usually\u00a0involves\u00a0women, but also\u00a0men,\u00a0children, and\u00a0adolescents\u00a0(The latter\u00a0two\u00a0cases\u00a0involve\u00a0the\u00a0added\u00a0sin\u00a0of\u00a0scandal.). While it is always\u00a0gravely\u00a0sinful\u00a0to\u00a0engage\u00a0in\u00a0prostitution, the\u00a0imputability\u00a0of the\u00a0offense\u00a0can be\u00a0attenuated\u00a0by\u00a0destitution,\u00a0blackmail, or\u00a0social\u00a0pressure.<\/p>\n<p>2356\u00a0Rape\u00a0is the\u00a0forcible\u00a0violation\u00a0of the\u00a0sexual\u00a0intimacy\u00a0of another\u00a0person. It does\u00a0injury\u00a0to\u00a0justice\u00a0and\u00a0charity.\u00a0Rape\u00a0deeply\u00a0wounds\u00a0the\u00a0respect,\u00a0freedom, and\u00a0physical\u00a0and\u00a0moral\u00a0integrity\u00a0to which every\u00a0person\u00a0has a\u00a0right. It\u00a0causes\u00a0grave\u00a0damage\u00a0that can\u00a0mark\u00a0the\u00a0victim\u00a0for\u00a0life. It is always an\u00a0intrinsically\u00a0evil\u00a0act.\u00a0Graver\u00a0still is the\u00a0rape\u00a0of\u00a0children\u00a0committed\u00a0by\u00a0parents\u00a0(incest) or those\u00a0responsible\u00a0for the\u00a0education\u00a0of the\u00a0children\u00a0entrusted\u00a0to them.<\/p>\n<p>Chastity\u00a0and\u00a0homosexuality<\/p>\n<p>2357\u00a0Homosexuality\u00a0refers\u00a0to\u00a0relations\u00a0between\u00a0men\u00a0or between\u00a0women\u00a0who\u00a0experience\u00a0an\u00a0exclusive\u00a0or\u00a0predominant\u00a0sexual\u00a0attraction\u00a0toward\u00a0persons\u00a0of the same\u00a0sex. It has\u00a0taken\u00a0a\u00a0great\u00a0variety\u00a0of\u00a0forms\u00a0through the\u00a0centuries\u00a0and in\u00a0different\u00a0cultures. Its\u00a0psychological\u00a0genesis\u00a0remains\u00a0largelyunexplained.\u00a0Basing\u00a0itself on\u00a0Sacred\u00a0Scripture, which\u00a0presents\u00a0homosexual\u00a0acts\u00a0as\u00a0acts\u00a0of\u00a0grave\u00a0depravity,<sup>140<\/sup>\u00a0tradition\u00a0has always\u00a0declared\u00a0that &#8220;homosexual\u00a0acts\u00a0are\u00a0intrinsically\u00a0disordered.&#8221;<sup>141<\/sup>\u00a0They are\u00a0contrary\u00a0to the\u00a0natural\u00a0law. They\u00a0close\u00a0the\u00a0sexual\u00a0act\u00a0to the\u00a0gift\u00a0of\u00a0life. They do not\u00a0proceed\u00a0from a\u00a0genuine\u00a0affective\u00a0and\u00a0sexual\u00a0complementarity. Under no\u00a0circumstances\u00a0can they be\u00a0approved.<\/p>\n<p>2358\u00a0The\u00a0number\u00a0of\u00a0men\u00a0and\u00a0women\u00a0who have\u00a0deep-seated\u00a0homosexual\u00a0tendencies\u00a0is not\u00a0negligible. They do not\u00a0choose\u00a0their\u00a0homosexual\u00a0condition; for most of them it is a\u00a0trial. They must be\u00a0accepted\u00a0with\u00a0respect,\u00a0compassion, and\u00a0sensitivity. Every\u00a0sign\u00a0of\u00a0unjust\u00a0discrimination\u00a0in their\u00a0regard\u00a0should be\u00a0avoided. These\u00a0persons\u00a0are\u00a0called\u00a0to\u00a0fulfill\u00a0God&#8217;s will in their\u00a0lives\u00a0and, if they are\u00a0Christians, to\u00a0unite\u00a0to the\u00a0sacrifice\u00a0of the\u00a0Lord&#8217;s\u00a0Cross\u00a0the\u00a0difficulties\u00a0they\u00a0may\u00a0encounter\u00a0from their\u00a0condition.<\/p>\n<p>2359\u00a0Homosexual\u00a0persons\u00a0are\u00a0called\u00a0to\u00a0chastity.
