He began the letter by\u00a0explaining<\/a>\u00a0how same-sex marriage would exploit children:<\/p>\n In the coming weeks, the Argentine people will face a situation whose outcome can seriously harm the family … At stake is the identity and survival of the family: father, mother and children. At stake are the lives of many children who will be discriminated against in advance, and deprived of their human development given by a father and a mother and willed by God.<\/p>\n n his\u00a0letter the cardinal, who three years later would become Pope Francis, then\u00a0clarified<\/a>\u00a0that legalizing same-sex marriage was a diabolical attack on the family:<\/p>\n At stake is the total rejection of God’s law engraved in our hearts. Let us not be naive: this is not simply a political struggle, but it is an attempt to destroy God’s plan. It is not just a bill but a “move” of the father of lies who seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.<\/p>\n At the\u00a0Humanum<\/em>\u00a0conference in 2014, Pope Francis\u00a0stated<\/a>, “Children have a right to grow up in a family with a father and a mother capable of creating a suitable environment for the child’s development and emotional maturity.”\u00a0In 2016, Pope Francis also\u00a0spoke out<\/a>\u00a0against the legalization of same-sex marriage in Mexico.<\/p>\n![](\"https:\/\/www.churchmilitant.com\/images\/uploads\/news_feature\/2018-02-18_Pope_Francis.jpg\")
