While the term \u201cgender\u201d was used to denote masculinity and femininity as early as the Middle Ages (for example, in grammar), the idea that a human person\u2019s masculinity or femininity could be separated from his or her bodily reality did not exist formally until the 1950s. Even then, the person at the origin of this concept \u2013 John Money \u2013 should give us pause, considering the controversy that surrounds him.
