Pacific DayughtTime<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">From:\u00a0\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/danieldsandiego.edu\/\">danield@sandiego.edu<\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Style2\"><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">To:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Style2\"><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">CC: <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">Ron Fowler has asked that the university contact you regarding the student sponsored event of a Drag Show <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">scheduled in a couple of weeks.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Style1\"><span class=\"CharacterStyle2\">If you want to give\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle2\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">me a\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle2\">call I will attempt to put the event\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle2\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">in\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle2\">the context that the university administration has<\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle2\">approached this and other student activities, I recognize that this may not change your position about whether\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">it is appropriate to have this event on campus, only to offer some information that you may not have.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Style2\"><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">As with all student sponsored events, an educational related rationale is expected as well as assurance thatbehavior at the event is consistent with the student organization handbook. Performers or presenters also sign\u00a0a document stating that their work will also be within the framework of behaviors deemed consistent with ouridentity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Style1\"><span class=\"CharacterStyle2\">In this case, the Pride organization along with Associated Students have put together a series of educational andentertainment events to bring attention to &#8220;gender identity&#8221; and &#8220;gender expression&#8221; prejudice and\u00a0protections. The newly passed state law prohibiting discrimination and harassment is the educational\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">component underlying the desire on the part of students for the scheduled activities. In dialogue with the\u00a0sponsoring group, as Student Affairs does with all groups, certain guidelines are in place to ensure that the show\u00a0is focused on its educational purpose; that it demonstrate respect for the human dignity of all people at all times; neither gender, nor transgender individuals should be mocked; all performers and participants refrain\u00a0from using language that may be experienced as offensive or degrading; music and content be within USD\u00a0guidelines; only advertised on campus and the show must demonstrate respectful standards of sexuality and\u00a0sexual activity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Style1\"><span class=\"CharacterStyle2\">Those involved with student events have been in contact with other Catholic universities who have hosted this kind of event already. While the controversial element and possibility for misunderstanding even around how\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">the program is advertised is certainly something we are aware\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\">of,\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">in itself &#8220;cross dressing&#8221; is not\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\">an\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">immoral\u00a0activity. As you are no doubt aware, the morality\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\">or\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">immorality of an activity\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\">is\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">related to intention and the actual behavior. We believe that we have made it clear that any immoral behavior is not acceptable on our campus. Ultimately, the students proposal is consistent with our support for diversity, respect for individual\u00a0dignity as well as academic freedom, freedom of inquiry and freedom of expression. As recently as last month\u00a0all of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\"><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\">San Diego<\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\">&#8216;s universities honored a<\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\">Kyoto<\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\">\u00a0prize winner who has spent his entire life in the ancient art of\u00a0Kabuke, a male actor dressing as a female and playing female roles. I recognize that the &#8220;Drag Show&#8221; moniker in\u00a0our society often represents\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\">a\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">less respectable level\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\">of\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">entertainment. Though I personally would have\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">preferred a different way to educate around this issue, I believe the intention of our students is honorable and not meant to violate sensitivities of alums and friends but to educate and bring about respect for all in our <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">society.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Style2\"><span class=\"CharacterStyle1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma;\">Fr.
