These positions are defined in relevant part in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and states as follows:

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,141 tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.”142 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.(Emphasis added.)

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.(Emphasis added.)

2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

***

I will continue to love my brothers and sisters who have homosexual inclinations, because, as a great sinner myself, I am not to judge. However, it is contrary to the teaching of the Catholic Church to approve and promote homosexuality and the homosexual lifestyle. Therefore, I cannot in good conscience and as a faithful Catholic agree with your underlying motive, which, as stated in your email, is “to promote the inclusion and visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) community.”

Furthermore, I am equally disturbed by your statement that “Rainbow Educators are committed to holding themselves and others accountable for working against all forms of oppression.” Based upon the reasoning of your statement, it is clear that you hold that Catholic teaching on homosexuality is a “form of oppression.” This is in direct contradiction to Catholic values, which form the basis of this University. Consequently, I strongly disapprove of your agenda of “accountability,” which in the name of “inclusivity” and “tolerance,” seeks to silence and attack those views which are contrary to your promotion of homosexuality.

In short, I will continue to respectfully submit my disapproval of the University of San Diego’s endorsement of these types of initiatives, which promote a gravely disordered and sinful lifestyle.

Sincerely,

Daniel Piedra

University of San Diego School of Law ’16

Dear Mr. Sanchez: As I have stated to you before, every time I receive in my University of San Diego email inbox an email that promotes homosexuality, […]

[22
