Being a graduate of USD (class of 1984) and Catholic, I am writing to
\nexpress my displeasure and sadness learning about the Drag Show which is to
\nbe held next week at USD.<\/p>\n
I pray for you and the members of faculty who are supporting this event as
\nwell as those who are in the show. I hope you will consider the damage it
\nwould do to all these souls as the President (shepherd) of this beautiful
\nand privileged university.<\/p>\n

Dear President Lyons:<\/p>\n
I am an USD alumni, undergrad 1989, MBA 1992 and JD 1992.\u00a0 Also I have
\nbeen an Adjunct Prof. of Law for USD Law School since 2000.\u00a0 I am
\nwriting to you to express my dismay that USD is allowing the Drag
\nQueen show to take place on campus.\u00a0 I simply think that the show is
\nin bad taste.\u00a0 It is one thing to allow certain events on campus in
\norder to expose the students to different ideas and concepts; but for
\na Catholic university to allow the Drag Queen show on campus, it just
\nsends a confusing and conflicting message to the students and the
\ncommunity at large.\u00a0 Does USD\u00a0 stand for Catholic values and
\ntraditions or does it not.\u00a0 If it doesn’t and it is basically a free
\nfor all , then let’s stop pretending USD is a Catholic university.
\nHowever, if USD wants to remain firmly tied to its roots then let’s
\nuse some discretion and not have such events on campus.\u00a0 I would feel
\nthe same way if some other student group on campus wanted to hold a
\nsimilar type function.\u00a0 Let me be clear, I am not against the groups
\nattempting to hold these events, I am against what may actually happen
\nat these events and how it reflects on USD’s core values.\u00a0 For
\nexample, let’s assume that there was a KKK group on campus and they
\nwanted to hold a slave auction on campus to celebrate their views and
\n“educate the public” about their heritage. I would also view this
\nevent as in bad taste, contrary to USD’s core values and thus not be
\nallowed on campus.\u00a0 Now I understand that this is an extreme example,
\nhowever, once the administration allows certain events on campus it
\nwill not be able to restrict other such events from occurring.\u00a0\u00a0 The
\nadministration needs to retain some control on what occurs on campus.
\nIf Pride wants to have a Drag Queen show let them have it off campus.

Is USD not on Holy Ground?\u00a0 Did its founders not dedicate it to holy purposes?
\nWhat is this insanity and affront to God you are purporting to do in
\nthe name of
\nunderstanding?<\/p>\n
It is difficult to believe that you can profess Christ with your mouth
\nand serve Satan
\nwith your conduct?<\/p>\n
It is a sad day when we cannot assume a Catholic University will not engage in
\npromoting perversion and exposing our children to what we would never
\npermit at home.<\/p>\n
I pray that you will turn from your wicked and misguided intentions.

I am sorry to have forward this on such a holy weekend, but time is
\nshort for action.\u00a0 My dear Protestant friends, when one of our family
\nmembers is under attack we all are and I hope\u00a0 you will read the
\nfollowing and take action to protest this abomination on what was
\nconsecrated Holy Ground
\nthe founding of the University of San Diego.\u00a0 Please keep this issue

Dear President Lyons,<\/p>\n
I am the mother of five children; one\u00a0 is currently a Rhodes Scholar
\nin Oxford and the youngest is a junior at Coronado High School.\u00a0 I
\nwould be mortified if my children were students at USD.\u00a0 My daughter
\nMegan was\u00a0 President of UCI Student Body for two years under
\nChancellor Michael Drake.\u00a0 At UCI they worked to support the student
\nbody and stand up for common decency and educational values.\u00a0 Why is
\nUSD allowing entertainment to spiral down to a guttural level?\u00a0 It is
\nvery objectionable to Catholics.<\/p>\n
My husband and I sold our home in Alpine to the Diocese of San Diego
\nat a discounted price so that Rev. Matthew Spahr could have housing in
\nAlpine while the new parish at Queen of Angels was being constructed.
\nWe are supporters of the Diocese!\u00a0 USD does not appear to be a
\nCatholic Institution or one that the Diocese leaders, i.e. parish
\npriests in San Diego, can promote to families as a university that
\npromotes Catholic values.\u00a0 It is a shame.<\/p>\n
I will pray for your leadership to align itself with a morality model
\nthat is appropriate for a Catholic institution of higher learning.<\/p>\n

A Drag show at USD?\u00a0 REALLY?<\/p>\n
One would think that with so many Catholic universities committing
\npublic relations blunders recently, this sort of thing would be out
\nof the question!\u00a0 Seriously, Dr. Lyons, the word is getting out
\nabout colleges like USD, Georgetown and the like and the word is
\nthat parents are spending thousands of dollars to educate their kids
\nin colleges that are Catholic In Name Only.\u00a0 Do you want the
\nperpetuation of that perception to be part of your legacy?<\/p>\n
I strongly encourage you to re-embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ
\nand let go of the gospel of Political Correctness.\u00a0 Show us some
\nleadership and cancel this disgraceful display of Perversion
\nTolerated and Approved.<\/p>\n

My wife and I reside in San Diego and have 11 children. USD is one of
\nthe universities our children had been considering. As devout
\nCatholics it’s disappointing to hear about USD allowing a drag show.
\nIf this is the environment the university is advocating, there is no
\nchance any of my children will be attending USD.<\/p>\n
The university, and yourself, have a moral obligation to ensure the
\nstudents attending USD are properly taught their faith, and instilled
\nwith Catholic values. Allowing a drag show undermines the Catholic
\ncharter, and leads astray the children put in your care.<\/p>\n
We will pray that you have the courage to reverse this decision, and
\nsend a clear message to your students, and the community, that USD
\nwill proudly demonstrate it’s Catholic values!<\/p>\n
