\nwe were recepients of the Bishop Buddy Award in 1988 and we have 3

\nNational Alumni Board, we were presidents of the USD Parents
\nAssociation, members of the Dean’s Council for the School of
\nEducation,\u00a0a founding member and Chairman of the Planned Giving
\nCommittee and current member of the 50th class reunion for the
\nupcoming Homecoming. I cannot believe that you are condoning and
\npermitting a drag show to be held on campus.\u00a0 This is an absolute
\ncontradiction to all that the Catholic Church holds sacred.\u00a0 It is
\ntime that USD returned to its Catholic tradition.\u00a0 I strongly urge you
\nto cancel this abominable event.<\/p>\n

I am writing as a Catholic San Diegan concerned about USD’s hosting of a
\ndrag show.\u00a0 My niece and nephew graduated from USD and I have attended many
\nbeautiful Masses at Founder’s Chapel, athletic events at JC, and even made a
\ncouple of presentations to a seminar at the Law School.\u00a0 USD advertises
\nitself as a Catholic University.\u00a0 As its President you have an obligation to
\nbe faithful to that call.\u00a0 Allowing the University to host an event that
\nmakes a mockery of the Church’s teaching is, to put it quite simply, wrong.
\nPlease do not kid yourself that USD is just being “open” to other
\nviewpoints.\u00a0 Would you allow USD to host an event sponsored by a racist
\norganization?\u00a0 What about an event that suggested mercy killing of old
\npeople?\u00a0 I sincerely hope not.\u00a0 Then, why is the hosting of a “drag” event
\npermitted?\u00a0 The Church’s teaching on sexuality is the beautiful Truth.
\nCelebrating sin in the guise of promoting “acceptance” does a disservice to
\nUSD, to the Church, and to yourself.\u00a0\u00a0 If you are not confident enough to be
\na real Catholic leader in a Catholic University, what hope do you hold for
\nyour students who go out into the secular world?\u00a0 Show some backbone and
\nleadership and simply say no:\u00a0 “USD is a Catholic University with a Cross in
\nour logo, and while we don’t require students or faculty to be Catholic, we
\nalso don’t allow our campus to be used to promote a lifestyle that is
\ncontrary to the Church’s teaching.”\u00a0 If the students protest, great.\u00a0 It is
\nopportunity for a straight up dialogue about what it means to be a Catholic
\nUniversity.\u00a0\u00a0 I am praying for you and for USD.\u00a0 Please do the right thing.
\nIf you don’t have the courage to do so, then at least be courageous enough
\nto quit calling USD a Catholic University.<\/p>\n

\nSchool. As a faithful Catholic, I am horrified that your
\nuniversity–which is supposed to be Catholic–will host a drag show,

I am a graduate of Georgetown University, C’61 and USD Law School,\u00a0 C’64.
\nI am also a GU\/USD donor.\u00a0 I wrote a letter to\u00a0 the President of GU
\nprotesting the “covering up” of a background religious\u00a0 symbol prior
\nto a speech by
\npresident BHO on campus.\u00a0 He never\u00a0 replied.\u00a0 GU also has a PRIDE group on
\ncampus.\u00a0 I realize\u00a0 that GLTG students exist on every campus and are entitled
\nto express their\u00a0 views.\u00a0 However, scheduling a “drag day” at any Catholic
\nUniversity\u00a0 appears to me to be contrary to the Christian values upon which
\nthose\u00a0 institutions were founded.\u00a0 I’m sure Bishop Buddy and Archbishop John
\nCarroll would agree with me.<\/p>\n
I urge you to cancel this event at USD.<\/p>\n

Dear President Mary Lyons,<\/p>\n
No words can express my shock and dismay over the planned drag show
\nnext week at
\nUSD. Christ suffered and died for sins such as those that will be exposed and
\ncelebrated during this \u201centertainment\u201d.<\/p>\n
The nails that ripped Christ’s hands and feet and the thorns that pierced his
\nprecious head were in reparation for these and other sins. He
\nwithstood vicious
\nlashes at the pillar where he was scourged and took on our sins. Is this the
\nthanks he gets? Could the sins of today have increased his suffering
\nthen? Could
\nthe prevention of sins committed today lessen his suffering then? In some
\nmysterious way, I think so.<\/p>\n
If consideration for Christ\u2019s suffering isn\u2019t sufficient, then
\nconsider your own
\nresponsibility for your soul and the souls of those who attend this event and
\nparticipate in it. In Saint Paul\u2019s letter to the Romans (Rom. 1:26-28, 32)
\nregarding homosexual activity it says something to be considered very
\nseriously:
\n\u201c . . . Though they know God\u2019s decree that those who do such things
\ndeserve to
\ndie, they not only do them but approve those who practice them.\u201d<\/p>\n
In 1Corinthians he also warns that homosexual sins are one of the sins
\nthat will
\ndeprive one of salvation.\u00a0 (1Cor. 6\u201410).
\nMs. Lyons, you do not know how soon you will be held accountable
\nbefore God for
\npermitting this show.<\/p>\n
Your website states:
\n\u201cAs the foundation of the university, USD\u2019s Catholic identity shapes
\nthe service
\nand education opportunities that encourage the holistic growth of our
\nstudents.\u201d*<\/p>\n
How could an event like this that celebrates homosexual acts which Sacred
\nScripture calls \u201cacts of grave\u00a0 depravity\u201d\u00a0 and Church tradition\u00a0 has always
\nconsidered intrinsically disordered, live up to this statement?**<\/p>\n
USD is known as a Catholic University. You are responsible for keeping it
\nauthentically Catholic, not some misshapen idea of what others might want
\nCatholicism to be.\u00a0 For all or some of the reasons given above, please
\nreconsider. I will be praying for you to have the strength to do what is right
\nby cancelling this scandalous show.<\/p>\n
